In August 2026, Rajiv Shah presented on Day 2 of the Tech in Gov expo in Canberra, speaking on “Preparing your systems for quantum computing: what it is and why it will change everything.”
The session focused on cutting through the hype to offer practical, actionable guidance — including a reminder that giving an organisation a quantum computer before it’s ready is a bit like giving a caveman a speedboat.
There were three proposed actions for organisations to start preparing now:
- Assess your quantum-vulnerable encryption. Identify where your current encryption may be exposed, assess the risk, and develop a migration plan to quantum-resistant solutions where required. There’s a lot of noise around quantum hype, but you still need to start assessing and planning now — otherwise you won’t know when to schedule this work into everything else on your cybersecurity roadmap.
- Prepare for a hybrid future. Quantum processors won’t replace existing classical CPUs or GPUs — they’ll only offer advantage for narrow use cases. This means thinking now about the infrastructure, skills, and processes needed to run applications across different types of processors.
- Find the “killer app” together. We don’t yet know where quantum computing will deliver the most value. Business experts need to work alongside scientists and mathematicians to identify where quantum algorithms can genuinely solve valuable business problems.
